The idea of staying active and fit is gaining momentum across all age groups and rightly so. As more people step outside to embrace exercise, one common option seen across parks and public spaces is the open gym. These outdoor fitness setups are becoming popular, especially among the elderly, offering a free and accessible way to stay healthy.

However, while these open gyms are a great initiative, they do come with their own set of challenges if not used wisely. Let me share a recent experience from my clinic to shed some light on this.

A Back Injury That Could Have Been Avoided

A few days ago, a patient walked into my clinic complaining of a sharp pain in his lower back. When we began to investigate the cause, he mentioned that the injury occurred while he was using one of the fitness machines at an open gym nearby. This raised some immediate concerns.

Open gyms, as many of you may know, are public facilities provided by municipal authorities like the BMC in Mumbai across parks and recreational grounds. They’re designed to encourage citizens, especially the elderly, to stay physically active without the burden of gym memberships or indoor fees. These facilities have fixed machines such as air walkers, pull-up bars, leg presses, and seated twisters, mimicking the ones you’d find in commercial gyms.

But here's the thing: not all of them are regularly maintained.

The Problem with Poorly Maintained Equipment

In my patient's case, the machine he was using had become stiff and jammed, likely due to prolonged exposure to weather and lack of servicing. The joints of the equipment weren’t moving the way they should have, which meant that while he was exercising, he had to exert more force than necessary. That excessive strain led to a muscle spasm and subsequent back pain.

This isn’t a one-off scenario. Several people especially the elderly may unknowingly put their bodies at risk if they use equipment that is:

  • Rusty or corroded

  • Difficult to move due to accumulated dirt or rust

  • Missing or broken parts

  • Not ergonomically safe due to wear and tear

Precautions to Take at Open Gyms

Before using any machine at an open gym, here are some simple checks you can do:

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for signs of rust, cracks, or loose handles.

  2. Test Before Use: Move the equipment gently to see if it flows smoothly.

  3. Listen to Your Body: If you feel resistance or discomfort, don’t force the movement.

  4. Avoid Peak Sunlight Hours: Metal surfaces can heat up quickly and burn your skin.

  5. Report Damages: Notify your local authority or park staff if you notice unsafe equipment.

Pros of Open Gyms When Used Safely

Despite the above concerns, open gyms are still a fantastic resource. They offer multiple benefits:

  • Free of cost: No membership fees or time restrictions.

  • Outdoor environment: Exercising in fresh air, surrounded by greenery, can elevate your mood and energy levels.

  • Good ventilation and sunlight: Ideal for vitamin D absorption and cardiovascular health.

  • Convenience: Located in your neighborhood park, these setups encourage regular workouts without travel hassles.

Final Thoughts: Enjoy, But Stay Aware

Open gyms are a great step toward promoting public health, especially for senior citizens and those who may not have access to private fitness centers. But with every opportunity comes the responsibility of using it safely.

So next time you head to your local open gym, take a moment to check the equipment. Listen to your body, and don’t push beyond what feels comfortable. And remember fitness is not just about exercising, it’s also about doing it right.

Take care, move smart, and enjoy the outdoors responsibly.
